Case Study:
UCD Training & Process Development

Client: Business Objects, an SAP company

Overview: The Vancouver User Experience (UE) team at Business Objects is involved with numerous development initiatives. Paul was asked to help the team meet ongoing interaction design challenges, lead interface design for a product in development, and to help further communicate the value of UCD. Additionally, to serve the team's widely-dispersed user base, they asked for Paul’s insight into conducting remote usability studies and at-distance project collaboration.

Goals: Three key goals were initially identified: enhance the User Experience team’s ability to address interaction design issues; help facilitate remote user studies and usability testing; and introduce project collaboration tools and techniques. An additional goal was identified for Paul to provide strategic usability consultation to senior management at the Vancouver office.

Audience: The primary audience was the User Experience team at Business Objects. Secondary audiences included staff of all levels, from senior management to co-op students. In addition, Paul delivered a company-wide presentation in-person, and Webinars highlighting the business value of the on-going user experience design efforts within the company.

Challenges: Providing the required expertise and resources apace with project timelines and related changes.

Work Performed: Educational seminars, design coaching, ad-hoc interface design feedback, acting as an expert resource for interaction design and user research, and instruction in usability-at-a distance tools and techniques. A dedicated project site was also set up for the client to facilitate discussions, file sharing, and project status snapshots, equally serving team members both in and out of the local office.
