Case Study: User Interface Design

Client: LapLink Software

Overview: ShareDirect, a product developed by LapLink, is a peer-to-peer file-sharing and collaboration application that emphasizes secure sharing and ease of use.

Goal: For ShareDirect stakeholders, the goal was simply stated and difficult to achieve: to create easiest file-sharing application on the market.

Audience: Any Microsoft® Windows® user who wants to seamlessly share files with friends, family, or co-workers.

Challenges: Entering the project late in the design process, Paul needed to work quickly without compromising usability expectations. By re-engineering key interaction elements in the existing interface, Paul’s work dramatically improved the usability of the end product.

Work Performed: This project required a number of techniques to be applied quickly and precisely, including Conceptual Design, Task Analysis, Comparative Analysis, Visual Layout, Interface Prototyping, and Usability Testing.

Industry Reviews: ShareDirect 1.0 was rated 4.5 out of 5 stars in the January 2005 issue of PC World, and included the reviewers’ comment “Installation was fast and painless, and in moments I was securely transferring my files.”

Additional Case Studies:
“Within three weeks Paul presented to us a design that was easy to implement and met all of our criteria. A key factor that helped Paul achieve these results so quickly was his streamlined design process and an excellent level of communication with our development team.”
